well forumotion's phpbb is a little different from the actual phpbb website's. I have heard from a Forumotion representative that this phpbb is handwritten script for only forumotion and they have included the most used modifications in the regular ACP where you can on/off those.
You can not install any modification from outside but you can suggest it only on forumotion's support forum.
